The y2k Raven

This poem is written using the style of Poe's The Raven - a lilt similar to some of my other poems.

Written on December 31, 1999, as we were all awaiting the arrival of January 1, 2000. The y2k bug really bites.... Or, does it?
Of course, it turned out that it didn't really bite.

T'was after Christmas just one week, our celebration at it's peak,
More frolic and fun we sought to tweak, we'd done this many times before
We were for the New Year waiting, our spirits high and celebrating
The poetic moment contemplating, what year 2000 had in store
When suddenly then my heart fluttered, the bubble burst right at the core!
It cannot be, or can it though?

That pesky bug on us inflicted, exactly as they had predicted
But oh! Much worse than they depicted, something never seen before
More than we could ever dream, far worse than any madman's scheme
It came, it struck, it was extreme, in just one day and nothing more
"It's the y2k bug!" I stuttered, I can’t believe this can be so!
Can it be? It must be so!"

As the world turned the bug had burst, Hong Kong and Japan were first
No one was spared and all were cursed, this had no equal heretofore
All New Year's celebrations stopped, everything everywhere had flopped
At midnight sharp the bug had popped, 'twas just as they had said before
I turned my TV on - it sputtered..., no CNN to see some more
And I was shaken to the core.

Banks and schools were obsolete, there were no people on the street
The market crash was now complete, Nasdaq and Dow went through the floor
The government had lost control, no gas, no food, no heat, no coal
Water sold 10 bucks a bowl - there simply was nowhere to go
Everything was trashed and cluttered, far worse than ever dreamed before
That damned bug had made it so!

Deep into the darkness peering, long I sat there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, shouting, crying, sneering, dreamed bad dreams ne’er dreamed before
But then the spell was really broken, and the truth was clearly spoken
‘Cause then quite simply I awoken, right there on my bedroom floor
That bug just fizzled out and sputtered, and I got up as the clock stuck four
'Twas just a dream and nothing more....
